What’s the Difference Between an Acupuncture Master’s Degree and a Doctorate?
If you’re exploring a career in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, one of the first questions you’ll face is: should I pursue a master’s degree or a doctorate? At Colorado Chinese Medicine University (CCMU), both pathways are available, and understanding the distinctions between them will help you choose the right fit for your goals, timeline, and career vision.
Both Degrees Lead to Licensure
Here’s something that surprises many prospective students: both master’s and doctoral graduates qualify for the same state licensure exams. Whether you earn a Master of Acupuncture (MAc), a Master of Acupuncture with Chinese Herbal Medicine (MAcCHM), a Doctor of Acupuncture (DAc), or a Doctor of Acupuncture with Chinese Herbal Medicine (DAcCHM), you will be eligible to sit for licensure examinations and practice as a licensed acupuncturist.
That said, the two degrees are not professionally equivalent. The differences in training depth, credential recognition, and career flexibility are real and worth understanding before you apply.
Master’s Degrees: Foundational Professional Training
CCMU’s master’s programs, the MAc and MAcCHM, are entry-level professional degrees designed to prepare students for clinical licensure. The curriculum covers foundational Chinese medicine theory, acupuncture technique, herbal medicine (in the MAcCHM), diagnostic methodology, biomedical sciences, and supervised clinical practice.
These programs are a strong fit for students who want a clear, focused path to practice. They are especially well-suited for those entering the field for the first time, those prioritizing a shorter path to earning income, or those building a private practice without aspirations for institutional employment or academic roles.
Professional Doctoral Degrees: Entry-Level Training at a Higher Standard
The DAc and DAcCHM at CCMU are professional doctoral degrees designed for students who want to begin their education at the doctoral level from day one. These programs do not require a prior master’s degree.
Doctoral programs build on the same foundational content as master’s programs but go deeper in clinical reasoning, diagnostic complexity, research literacy, and integrative care. Students are trained to navigate complex and multi-system presentations, think analytically about treatment strategies, and communicate across healthcare disciplines.
Graduates of these programs carry the “Doctor” title into clinical settings, which can carry weight when working alongside physicians, nurse practitioners, and other licensed providers in integrative or institutional environments. Many hospital-based programs and academic medical centers are increasingly specifying or preferring doctoral credentials for acupuncture positions.
Already Licensed? The DAOM and PD Completer Track
For licensed acupuncturists who hold a master’s degree and want to advance their training, CCMU offers two additional pathways:
Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM): A 24-month, post-graduate doctoral program for licensed practitioners. The DAOM is CCMU’s highest level of clinical training, rooted in classical Chinese medicine and qi-based diagnostics. Students develop advanced pulse-centered assessment skills, long-term treatment strategies, and the capacity to address chronic and complex conditions at the level of systemic regulation.
Professional Doctor Completer Track: A 330-hour, 17-credit program for graduates of ACAHM-accredited master’s programs who want to complete either the DAc or DAcCHM. The program can be finished in two to four trimesters and includes fully online flexible learning alongside clinical development.
Which Degree Is Right for You?
- If you are new to the field and want foundational training, consider MAc or MAcCHM
- If you are starting fresh and want a doctoral credential from day one, consider DAc or DAcCHMA
- If you are a licensed practitioner seeking advanced clinical mastery, consider DAOMA
- If you are a master’s graduate wanting to complete a professional doctorate, consider the PD Completer Track
Frequently Asked Questions
Do both master’s and doctoral graduates qualify for the same license?
Yes. In most U.S. states, both master’s and doctoral graduates from ACAHM-accredited programs qualify for the same licensure examinations and hold equivalent legal scopes of practice once licensed.
Can I start with a master’s and upgrade to a doctorate later?
Yes. CCMU’s Professional Doctor Completer Track allows eligible master’s graduates to complete the additional requirements for a DAc or DAcCHM. The program is designed to be completed in two to four trimesters with flexible, online instruction.
What is the difference between the DAcCHM and the DAOM?
The DAcCHM is an entry-level professional doctoral degree for students who have not yet been licensed. The DAOM is a post-professional doctoral degree for licensed acupuncturists seeking advanced clinical development. They serve different stages of a practitioner’s career.
Will a doctorate help me earn more?
Income in acupuncture depends more on practice setting, patient volume, and business skills than on degree type alone. However, doctoral credentials can open doors to institutional positions, such as hospital-based integrative medicine roles, that may specify or prefer advanced training.
Is the DAOM a research degree or a clinical degree?
At CCMU, the DAOM integrates advanced clinical practice with scholarly inquiry. Research serves to validate real-world outcomes and refine clinical reasoning rather than functioning as an isolated academic pursuit. The program is primarily designed to develop clinical mastery.
